Day 14 – Campaign Reflections

The What’s the Stitch Campaign is ending today, so here is my reflection on wearing only 14 items of clothing for 14 days and my final thoughts for the project.

Day 13 – The Future of Sustainable Fashion

The campaign is ending soon, so here are some of the reasons I am hopeful for the future of the fashion industry. We can all continue to make a difference with our everyday purchases and every small step makes a difference!

Day 12 – Greenwashing

In this video I take a look at the term greenwashing, what it means and how to tell when companies are taking part in its practices.

Day 11 – Sustainable Shoes

I’ve talked a lot about finding sustainable clothing throughout the What’s the Stitch campaign, but now it’s time to talk about shoes. Shoes also have the potential to deeply impact people and the planet, but there are some great ways in which we can be more sustainable with our footwear.

Day 10 – Sustainable Disposal of Clothing

Learning to buy less and buy better is an ongoing process, but what happens when you want to get rid of old clothes without them going directly to a landfill? Here are some options for more sustainable ways of getting rid of old clothes.

Day 9 – Social Impacts of Fast Fashion

Last week I went through eight of the biggest environmental impacts of the fast fashion industry, so here are some of the reasons fast fashion has such a negative social impact as well.

Day 8 – Temptations of Fast Fashion

Trendy, fast fashion clothing can be extremely tempting to consumers, but why is this the case? Fast fashion brands want to move as much of their clothing as quickly as they can and they employ many strategies to make us feel a need to buy clothes we may not even want. This is my take on how this works and why more sustainable clothing is the solution.

Day 7 – My Favorite Sustainable Brands

As sustainable fashion becomes more important to consumers, more ethical brands are quickly emerging. Here are five of my current favorite sustainable clothing brands.  See video description on YouTube for links to these brands.

Day 6 – Fair Trade Certifications

Fair trade certifications are an easy way for consumers to quickly assess the ethicality of many products, including clothing.  Here is an overview of some major fair trade organizations, their logos, and how fair trade certifications apply to clothing.

Day 5 – Sustainable Fashion Student Interview

Nogah Seidemann is a senior apparel and design merchandising student with a minor in environmental affairs.  She is currently working on a senior design project which repurposes old textiles as new pieces.  In this interview we chat about Nogah’s view on sustainable fashion and how she thinks other people can implement more sustainable practices in their own lives.

Day 4 – Sustainability on a Budget

Sustainable clothing brands can have prices which seem out of reach for the average person, but it’s possible for everyone to have an ethical wardrobe on a budget.  Here are the ways in which I consume clothing without breaking the bank.

Day 3 – Clothing Care Symbols

Prolonging the life of your clothes by taking proper care of them can be extremely beneficial to both you and the planet.  Here is a guide to the common laundry symbols often seen on clothing care labels.

Day 2 – Environmental Impacts

Learn more about the impacts of the fast fashion industry on the environment.  From pollution to squandered resources, the fashion industry has affected the stability of the planet’s ecosystems, endangering the plants, animals and people living on it.

Day 1 – Introduction

An introduction to the What’s the Stitch campaign.  Learn more about the motivations behind the project and what 14 clothing and shoe items will be use throughout the two-week capsule wardrobe challenge.
